Jamie Cullum es un músico británico nacido en Essex hace 26 años. ¿Cuál es la gracia? Que ya a los 23 no sólo era reconocido como el más popular (y quizás el más grande en la actualidad) exponente del jazz británico y europeo. Después de haber producido un disco independiente del cual vendía copias en sus presentaciones en bares y pubs, fue contratado por una transnacional a cambio de €1.400.000.000 para ser invertidos en sus producciones por los próximos 5 años. Sin embargo, lo más importante no son los números ni la cantidad de premios que ha conseguido. Es que, además de su talento innato, Jamie Cullum es un joven al que le gusta la música en general, amante del rock, de la indie, del pop, el blues y la electrónica. Sin embargo, es en el jazz donde siente que puede reunir todos los estilos en uno solo. Y eso se nota.

En su repertorio, además de las composiciones que realiza junto a su hermano Ben Cullum, incorpora clásicos del jazz de todos los tiempos, como una que me gusta mucho: “You and the night and the music”, compuesta por Howard Dietz y Arthur Schwartz en 1934 y que escuché por primera vez (hasta donde me acuerdo) en la versión que Frank Sinatra hizo en 1961 en su álbum “Ring a Ding Ding”. También es parte de "I Capture the Castle", donde Romola Garai ve escapar a su objeto de deseo Henry "E.T." Thomas en manos de su hermana. Cullum la incluyó en su disco “Pointless Nostalgic” en 2002 y suena totalmente actual. Del mismo modo, y al igual que Jorge Drexler en “12 Segundos de Oscuridad” (2006), Cullum tomó “High and Dry” de Radiohead para hacer su propia versión. Es este repertorio que se pasea sin complejos por distintas edades de la música contemporánea, además de su voz, su actitud de artista pop y su habilidad en el piano, lo que ha permitido que toda Inglaterra esté cantando swing, acercando el jazz a terrícolas de todas las generaciones.

La mejor definición que he leído sobre este artista con sangre de Myanmar en las venas, es la de Diego Fischerman para Página/12: “Canta y compone canciones que podrían esperarse de sus abuelos. Y vende en pocos meses más que Enrique Iglesias, Britney Spears o Kylie Minogue en todo un año”.

Su primer CD se llama “Jamie Cullum Trio-Heard it all before” (1999) y cuesta mucho encontrarlo, puesto que fue una edición limitada autofinanciada por su autor. Luego siguió “Pointless Nostalgic” (2002), que le abrió las puertas de la industria y que incluye “I can’t get started”, una canción que parece no aburrirse de ser escuchada y que no piensa dejar de tener versiones; “Twentysomething” (2003), donde la versión que hace para “Singin’ in the Rain” es sencillamente atrevida. Ese CD batió todos los records de venta de Gran Bretaña para una producción de jazz; y “Catching Tales” (2005), quizás el menos jazzístico, pero el que incorpora más “elementos” de la música sincopada en canciones abiertamente pop como “Get your way” y “London Skies”. De este CD destaco el track 5 “Nothing I Do”.

Hay mucho más que hablar de él. Muchas colaboraciones, shows, composiciones para musicales, su historia familiar (su mamá en la voz, su padre en la guitarra y su abuelo en el saxo, formaban un trío que tocaba en bares canciones de The Beatles y Burt Bacharach, entre otros). Es Jamie Cullum, un exponente del ¿jazz-pop?, que en septiembre pasado cantó en el Luna Park de Buenos Aires y en 5 ciudades de Brasil. Por supuesto, la prensa “especializada” y los productores de espectáculos de Chile lo ignoraron.
